What your cat is actually watching out the window

The window seat is the most used piece of furniture in most cat households, and the least understood. Cats are not idly people-watching. They are patrolling.

Indoor cats still hold a mental map of territory that extends past the glass. Watching a neighborhood cat cross the lawn is information gathering, and for some cats it is genuinely stressful — the intruder is inside the map but out of reach.

Making the window better

• Add height. A perch above eye level lowers stress more than a wide sill does.
• Break up sightlines with a frosted film on the lower third if outdoor cats are causing spraying or growling.
• Put a bird feeder within view but far enough away that the birds are relaxed.

If your cat stares out and then redirects on a housemate, the window is not neutral entertainment. Treat it as a resource worth managing.
